Hurricanes Coming to Portway

Hurricanes Coming to Portway

League 1 Rugby League Side Midlands Hurricanes Move their Home to Portway

In an exciting development for the club it has been announced that semi-pro rugby league side Midlands Hurricanes will spend the 2022 season at Portway in a deal that will see year round activity at the ground involving both rugby codes.
The league 1 side, who have rebranded from their former guise of Coventry Bears, will start pre-season training in December. Pre-season friendlies and cup games are planned in January and February. The league season that runs from March to early September has 10 home league matches in the calendar. Most of those matches will take place on Sunday afternoons.
The agreement will see Hurricanes being able to base their training and match day activities at the same location for the first time and will offer both clubs the opportunity to develop their commercial propositions.
It is anticipated that the arrangement will last one season only as the Hurricanes are in talks with the owners of the Alexandra stadium about a possible move there from the 2023 season.
Bees chairman and head of senior rugby, Lou Lupoli, said “we are delighted to have been able to agree this deal with Hurricanes. It is a very positive move for our club and complements the other recent expansion of usage of the Portway facility through our highly successful arrangements with our friends Hillfield AFC and NEW Ravens rugby league team”.
We must all be looking forward to the inevitable headline “Hurricanes blow away opposition at wind-swept Portway”.
